Remember the magical feeling of getting lost in a good book as a kid? The joy of discovering your love of reading? Entering the world of literature as a kid is a wondrous experience, but writing books for kids can be just as rewarding. In this craft talk, we will explore the various genres and levels of kidlit, including picture books, chapter books, and YA, and we will do a particular deep dive into middle grade novels (ages 8-12). We will discuss the dos and don’ts of middle grade fiction, examining the long-enduring structures of the stories as well as getting up to date with recent trends. Using classic YA books, recent hits, and my own novels (Finally, Something Mysterious and Finally, Something Dangerous) as examples, we will go through the process of honing your narrative voice to hit just the right note for young readers. Bring your curiosity, story ideas, and love of reading and get ready for the start of a grand adventure!
