The Art of Comedic Fiction

It’s not easy to make readers laugh, but I find that when you do, they might be more willing to follow you down whatever path you take them on. Comedy works in many ways, whether it’s absurd, whimsical, culturally specific, and/or tragic in nature. And comedy works best when it speaks to the human condition in profound ways while amusing the reader.

Through informal lectures, the discussion of short excerpts, and generative exercises, we’ll discuss different narrative strategies that produce comedy in fiction. We’ll focus on developing humorous characters and establishing a comic voice, and we’ll also consider the intricacies of the tragicomic vision.
