In this class, we will examine the couplet, or two-line stanza, and its role in poetry. Using a chapter of Robert Hass’s A Little Book on Form as our guide, we’ll explore two-line poems, two-line stanzas, and how to play with the form and function of our couplet poems. When should we use couplets? When should we resist them? How do we listen to our poems about the form they want to take? Come ready to generate couplets of your own or even revisit an existing poem to play in the wild and whimsical world of duality and twoness.
