Workshop

Hermit Crab Poetry: Fun Twists on Poetic Form

With:
Ariana Brown

In this generative workshop, we will study and write hermit crab poems—poems that borrow their “shell” from existing documents, games, and forms of communication. Starting with unorthodox forms like bingo and acceptance speeches, this course encourages students to play and experiment with the many shapes a poem can take. Over five weeks, we will experience the joy of balancing serious topics with playful forms, creating the tension required to produce dynamic, compelling poems.

Each workshop will include readings, discussion, a mix of structured and open-ended prompts, time to write, and time to share. Students will leave class with at least 5 poem drafts plus prompts and suggested readings to further their study. Examples will be sourced from a diverse range of poets such as Dezireé A. Brown, Fatimah Asghar, and Melissa Lozada-Oliva to learn how each poet explores the limits and possibilities of borrowed forms.

Taking inspiration from video games, dictionaries, spells, and lists of instructions, this course is designed to shake up participants’ poetry writing practice through experimentation and whimsical approaches to poetic form. Ideal for poets writing for the page and the stage.
