Too often overlooked and under-respected in literary circles, "genre fiction," especially speculative and fabulist fiction, have unique opportunities to reflect our real world in their invented worlds. We will discuss emerging and established iconography of various genres, and ways writers can work within and beyond these existing languages to establish worlds slightly (or extremely) different from our own. We will explore means of engagingly explaining unfamiliar worlds without relying unduly on exposition, leading into exercises applicable for writers in any prose style, with time for sharing and discussion.
