Focusing on the Smallest Moment Inside of Us: The Art of Micro-Poems

With:
Meg Thompson

Poems that are small in stature inexplicably have the ability to leave the biggest impacts on us. Stripped of any excess, they act as shards of highly-concentrated texts, taking incredibly specific emotions and distilling them into something that is often universal. In each class we will study several micro-poems and how their extreme language compression functions to make a memorable poem. Every week will have a different focus, such as poems that are longer than the title, or the art of haiku. We will draft our own micro-poems in response and also workshop and revise them so that by the end of the six weeks each person will have a solid collection of their own micro-poems. For our final class, we will have a celebration of all things micro where we read our poems and enjoy the micro-community we have established.
