Writing Our Heritage

We tell tales or hand down stories about our ancestors and our heritage to provide us with comfort, knowledge, and perspective. We also possess the need to write these stories down for the next generation. Parsing through one’s family narratives, their historical and cultural context, and what secrets or parts of themselves have been hidden from us, we better understand ourselves.In this workshop, participants will be prompted to write in various genres to find those links with their past. Reviewing published works and using them as guides into our own work, writers will examine the role place, customs, food, and the larger society play in how we interpret the world that surrounds us. Participants will have an opportunity to share their words in a supportive setting and will be given ideas for future work.
