Pick Me!: Applying for Grants, Fellowships, and Residencies

With:
Liz Breazeale

The hardest part of being a writer is keeping track of all your riches, amirite?! I mean, how are you supposed to monitor the constant stream of money, free trips, and mansions people throw at you?

If that describes your writing career, then congrats on your unstoppable success!

For the rest of us mere mortals, however, the slog of applying is necessary to get access to grant funding, fellowships, and artist residencies. And those applications can be annoying to navigate; who even knows what an artist statement or project proposal is anyway, and what does a good one look like?!

While we all know there’s no guarantee of success as a writer, this one-time course is an attempt to demystify what can be a baffling process, both on the submission and selection sides. We’ll go over topics like how to get organized and find calls for applications; how to write clear, concise artist statements and other application materials; and how to select the right writing sample, along with other tips and tricks for how to make your application stand out as much as possible. This class will also include some writing and brainstorming exercises.
