Debra Johanyak is an adjunct instructor who teaches writing and literature at The University of Akron. Her memoir Behind the Veil chronicled experiences in Iran as a graduate student during the hostage crisis. Other books include Shakespeare's World and, as co-editor with Walter Lim, The English Renaissance and the Idea of Asia as well as Say What You Really Mean.

Debra’s academic articles appear in publications like Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education and The College Language Association Journal. She has produced dramas such as “In the Company of Extraordinary Women” performed at Hower House, a Victorian mansion at The University of Akron, for Women’s History Month. She enjoys Ohio history and hiking area parks and trails with family and friends.
