There was a time when I would wake

There was a time when I would wake

on a summer morning feeling light and free.

These days, I wake and wonder,

will today be the day the enemy overtakes me?

I used to embrace uncertainty,

with its tiny green seedlings of possibility.

Now, with so much at stake

(democracy, decency, survival),

I pray instead.
