Submit your writing in response to Currents and Constellations artwork and you may be selected to read your work at the Cleveland Museum of Art!

Literary Cleveland is currently accepting submissions of creative writing inspired by or in response to the Cleveland Museum of Art exhibition Currents and Constellations: Black Art in Focus. Select writers will be invited to read their work at a special event at the Cleveland Museum of Art on Friday, May 20 at 7p.m.

About the Exhibition

Currents and Constellations: Black Art in Focus, curated by Key Jo Lee, features 25 unique works created by 19 artists of the Black diaspora, brought together to broaden visitors’ sense of Black artistic production, place Black art and artists at the center of a conversation about the relevance of art to life, and shed new light on the CMA’s permanent collection. View the exhibition in person at CMA or online at https://www.clevelandart.org/exhibitions/currents-and-constellations-black-art-focus.

Write-In on March 26

Fuel your writing with inspiration from Black art.

Join Literary Cleveland the CMA on Saturday, March 26 between 12:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. and explore the works in Currents and Constellations: Black Art in Focus through a variety of writing prompts and activities. CMA curator Key Jo Lee will be on hand to answer questions about the art on view.

Submit Your Writing by April 18 (Deadline Extended)

We are looking for writing submissions that not only describe, imagine, advance, or respond to the works in the exhibition, but also interplay with the exhibition themes. We encourage poems, stories, essays, flash fiction and nonfiction, spoken word pieces, and inventive pieces of writing that play with forms, experiment with structure, push the possibilities of language, and represent.

This can mean representing individual or collective experience or perspective through writing; re-presenting the exhibition art through writing; standing up for Black people and expressing solidarity with Black struggle; and/or questioning ideas of what “representation” means (who gets to represent who, how does art succeed or fail in representing complex peoples and ideas, etc.).

Submissions are due by April 18, 2022 and will be reviewed by Lit Cleveland and the Cleveland Museum of Art. Notification responses will be sent by the end of April in advance of the event on Friday, May 20 at 7 p.m. Submit your writing here.
