Buckle down for a weekend of writing and (virtual) community with Gordon Square Review’s Weekend Write-a-Thon!

Take part in optional writing sessions, editor Q&As, networking sessions, an editor roundtable, or just focus on generating new work. All sessions are held virtually over Zoom, and participants will also have access to a Slack channel to meet one another and share writing if desired. Your donation supports Gordon Square Review, Literary Cleveland’s award-winning international literary journal that offers writing mentorships and spotlights Northeast Ohio writers.

WHO

You, other writers looking to build writing endurance, and the Gordon Square Review editorial staff.

 

WHAT

The Write-a-Thon will provide the virtual space and motivation to write for a weekend. It also serves as a fundraiser for Gordon Square Review, Literary Cleveland’s international literary journal that highlights Northeast Ohio writers and provides mentorships for emerging writers.

 

WHERE

Virtually online via Zoom and Slack.

 

WHEN

Friday, December 3 through Sunday, December 5.

 

SCHEDULE

All events are optional and meant to help motivate you to write.

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 3

  • 7-8pm: Opening Ceremony. Kick off your weekend of writing by virtually “meeting” GSR editors and other write-a-thon participants. Set and share your goals for the weekend and get geared up to write.

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 4

  • 7-9am: Early Bird Writing Session with Laura. Start the day right by cranking out some words first thing with GSR’s editor in chief, Laura Maylene Walter.
  • 10-11am: Writer Roulette. Meet other participants in a mix of randomly assigned small-group Zoom sessions for the chance to find a new critique or accountability partner.
  • 12-2pm: Getting to the First Draft with Jason. This generative session will include a craft talk from GSR’s poetry editor Jason Harris.
  • 3-5pm. Drop-In Critiques & Writing Session with Nardine. Along with some concentrated writing time, participants will have the chance to receive on-the-spot feedback from prose editor Nardine Taleb.
  • 7-8pm. Gordon Square Review Launch Party. Join GSR editors and contributors as we celebrate the launch of Issue 9 of GSR!

SUNDAY, DECEMBER 5

  • 7-9am: Early Bird Writing Session with Laura.
  • 10-11am: GSR Editor Roundtable. Join the GSR editors as they discuss the submission and selection process for the journal. Participants can ask questions and pick up tips about the literary magazine submission process.
  • 12-2pm: Okay, I've Got My First Draft—Now What? Jason Harris leads this generative session and craft talk.
  • 3-5pm. Drop-In Critiques & Writing Session with Nardine.
  • 7-8pm: Closing Ceremony & Open Mic. Join GSR editors and other participants for closing ceremonies and the chance to share a snippet of your work with other attendees.

 

COST

The Write-a-Thon functions as a fundraiser for Gordon Square Review and to give writers the time and space to work on their own writing. We encourage all participants to embrace the spirit of the event by donating to help support their own time spent at the Write-a-Thon.
