In this intermediate, comprehensive, and immersive personal essay workshop, participants will read and discuss five highly-anthologized essays by diverse writers; complete unique generative exercises; talk about craft elements such as place, characterization, voice, and revision; and complete a first draft of an essay for week five, then a final draft for week six, when all students will present to the whole class.

Scott Lax is an award-winning essayist, fiction writer, filmmaker, and lecturer in Creative Writing at the Cleveland Institute of Art. His first novel, The Year That Trembled, was named one of 1998’s “Milestones in Fiction” by the Denver Post. He produced the feature film version of his novel, then adapted it as a 2-act stage play that premiered at University School.
