Workshop

Party for Your Heartbreak: Craft Elements in Poetry - October 2022

With:
Geramee Hensley

Mindy Nettifee says, "I want to throw a party for the heartbreak that turned you into a poet."

This class is that party, and while we're here, no matter where any one of us might be in the writer's journey, we are all poets.

One half of this course will focus on generative writing tasks: reading and studying essential craft elements of poetry together and experimenting with these methods in our own work. Topics include sound, anaphora, association, and audience/intention. Poetry also lives in the breath, and we will discuss how it exists off the page (on the stage and through visual techniques).

The other half of this class will focus on workshop, where students will read each other's work and offer feedback. Models of various kinds of feedback to select from will be provided, and the writer's agency will be respected throughout this process.

It is expected that all writers who take this course will write at least four new pieces and have their writing workshopped once. [Note: This last sentence can vary depending on class size].

Party for Your Heartbreak: Craft Elements in Poetry takes place remotely through Zoom.
