In this master class, we’ll address some crucial topics for historical fiction writers: material vs. emotional accuracy in world-building; the temptations and pitfalls of “reading backward”; shaping an accessible voice; cultural appropriation and research as a way of knowing; and methods for conducting research. This class will include writing exercises designed to help you brainstorm ideas and strategies for your own historical fiction project.

Katharine Beutner is the author of Killingly (coming June 2023) and Alcestis, winner of the Edmund White Award for Debut Fiction and finalist for a Lambda Literary Award.
