Join us August 15 for a discussion with Emmy-award winning television writer and producer Dan O'Shannon! The former executive producer of Modern Family and author of What Are You Laughing At? A Comprehensive Guide to the Comedic Event, O'Shannon will share some of the tricks he's learned in his 37 years making people laugh, with the goal of offering participants perspectives on the art and craft of comedy that might influence their approach to writing it. Joining O'Shannon will be professional comedian and Cleveland native Mike Polk Jr. Q & A to follow.
Part of our Between the Lines series, an event spotlighting award-winning local authors taking place every other month at Happy Dog Euclid.
Dan O’Shannon was born and raised in the Cleveland area, where he lived off a diet of everything that was ever on channel 43 in the 70s. He dropped out of Cleveland State in his freshman year to pursue comedy writing, and after three years of doing stand-up, took his chances on a one-way ticket to Los Angeles, a hundred dollars, and a friend’s couch.
Since then he’s written hundreds of episodes of TV series such as Newhart, Cheers, Frasier, and Modern Family. He’s also done dramas, sci fi, animated shorts, and two books, one of which is a textbook laying out a new comedy theory model. He’s received multiple Emmys, Golden Globes, WGA awards, an Oscar nomination, a Peabody award, and an Annie award for best animated short, 2005. He now owns his own couch.
Mike Polk Jr. is a Cleveland-based comedian who has been performing stand up, improv and sketch comedy all over the country for the last ten years. Combined, his videos on youtube have over 20 million hits. His work has been seen on HBO, Cinemax, and TNT. He is the writer and star of the popular web series Man In The Box and the creator of The Hastily Made Cleveland Tourism Videos. His stage show is a unique blend of hilarious videos, stand up and music and has to be seen to be believed.
