The afternoon sun beaming through the windows functioned as the spotlight for the six returning students at Lit Cleveland's songwriting workshop on Saturday, 2/27. They were all eager to continue learning the skills of songwriting with facilitator Brent Kirby, one of Northeast Ohio's best-known musicians.
At their first session a few weeks ago, the group had focused on the basics of songwriting: rhythm, chords and the anatomy of a song. But, after the charge given by Brent -- to create a song focused on ‘religious metaphors’ -- the group gathered again, this time wielding a plethora of lyrics, beats and styles.
Under Brent's direction, the Brothers Lounge Wine Bar was suddenly one degree of separation away from a classroom. With each individual sharing via either recitation or singing, the six voices were examined and critiqued by their peers, providing direction, organization, and small tweaks that helped push the songs to the next level and gave the writers greater confidence.
By the end of the session, the room was saturated with great music. Brent’s excitement and zeal for his own craft had rubbed off on those present, and it was impossible to leave without a smile on your face and a foot-tapping rhythm in your head.
Brent sings an original he wrote just the night before, titled After All These Years.
