As part of our ongoing mission to shine a spotlight on the city’s best up-and-coming writers, we’ll be sharing the talents of five writers 25 and under. Come out and show your support for young talent in Cleveland’s literary arts community!
About the readers:
Angelo Maneage is a playwright, comic, poet, and grocery stock clerk. He is also a 21-year-old senior at Cleveland State University studying Creative Writing, the recipient of the 2017 Leonard Trawick Scholarship for excellence in creative writing, and the recipient of the Academy of American Poets' 2017 Alberta Turner Poetry Prize. His poems can be found in or are forthcoming to Z Publishing House's Best Emerging Poets of Ohio anthology, Poets.org, and the garbage. Plays he has written have been picked up for the 2017 Mac Wellman Homecoming Festival, The Manhattan Project Play Lab, and The Vindicator Houron WCSB 89.3 FM. His stand-up comedy has earned him compliments deeming him "a breath of fresh air."
Raja Freeman was Cleveland’s 2017 youth poetry grand slam champion. Freeman represented the city of Cleveland at the Annual Brave New Voices Festival and Competition in San Francisco last summer. She is a poet, musician, and visual artist, who has also placed second in the Ohio Poetry Association’s student contest. Freeman was also a Lieutenant Governor for Key Club International. She is attending Cleveland State University this fall with an undecided major. Alys Dutton
Alysandra Dutton graduated from Hiram College in 2015 with a Bachelor of Arts in Creative Writing. Her fiction and nonfiction has been honored by the AWP Intro Journals Project and the Echo Regional Literary Contest. Currently she is a narrative designer and script-writer for Asmadi Games and a resident of Coventry Village in Cleveland Heights. Angel Cezanne
Angel Cezanne is a writer, activist, and creator of the feminist publication for literature and the arts, Eleanor: A Zine. She graduated Summa Cum Laude from Kent State University in 2014 with a major in journalism and two minors in creative writing and psychology. In January of 2017, she was selected as one of Cleveland Magazine's "Most Interesting People," alongside local artists, athletes, and other influencers. Sara Shearer
Sara Shearer is a recent graduate of Hiram College, where she had poems published in the Columbus College of Art and Design's Botticelli magazine and in the University of Pittsburgh's Collision and won multiple awards for her writing across genres. She now lives in Ravenna and continues writing poetry with the hope of someday completing a book-length work and having it published.
